Tour Discription
The first stop is the designated National Park Thingvellir, the site of the world’s first Parliament in AD 930 and a UNESCO Heritage Site today.
The area is also a hotbed of tectonic activity, miles below the earth’s surface. Here, more than 100 million years ago, the continents of North America and Europe were created by the splitting of a gigantic land mass, and Iceland resulted.
From here we will continue through a delightful region of green farmland until the land suddenly turns red and, out of nowhere, steam seems to rise out of the earth and the whiff of rotten eggs is noticeable – we reach Geysir, the original shooting hot spring that gave its name to similar phenomena around the world. The Great Geysir erupts rather irregularly these days, but its next-door neighbour “Strokkur” erupts about every 10 minutes and its huge white column of boiling water can reach heights of 20-30 meters.
Gullfoss, the “Golden Falls” are located just a few kilometers from the Geysir hot spring area. Arguably Iceland’s prettiest waterfall, these incredible shutes have several viewpoints, all dramatic in their own right. On overcast days, the falls are still extraordinary, and the raw sense of power seems to come through even more clearly.
On the way back to Reykjavik we make a short stop at Kerid volcano.
